New Sarum P.S. - About Us

New Sarum Public School consisted originally of a two classroom high red brick structure built in 1946 (and opened in May of 1947) on the northwest corner of old Highway 3 and Highway 74. This building was Yarmouth Public School #19. It replaced a two room school situated approximately one km. to the west.

The two classroom teachers were: Dorothy Kipp (Grades 5-8 and Acting Principal) and Helen Laidlaw (Grades 1-4). The enrolment was approximately 65 students. The east classroom also contained a small kitchen unit and a stage. This room, for many years, entertained the community with Christmas concerts, Home and School meetings and card parties. Other features of the school included basement washrooms, an upstairs staff room and heating, by a coal hot air furnace. Students were summoned by a large bell in the cupola on the roof pulled by a rope hanging in the central hall. A frightful event occurred in 1948 when a tornado blew off the roof.

Over the years, the building's appearance has changed. In the 1950's another classroom and new washrooms were added to the north. The basement storage areas were renovated.

In 1969, the new school was constructed. It was built with a large double gymnasium, change rooms, kitchenette, storage areas, administrative offices, library, kindergarten room, science room, and eleven classrooms. The front foyer was decorated with a large tile mural.

The school was christened Yarmouth Township Public School #2. It incorporated the schools from the surrounding area including Dewars (Yarmouth #23), The Glen Public School, Skeldings, Belmont, and Centennial School's grade 7 and 8's. Later, Orwell Public School was closed and many of these students were moved to New Sarum.

For a time, the school was know as New Sarum-Centennial Public School since Centennial Public School was a satellite school until it was closed in June of 1983. Presently the school provides education for students from Orwell to St. Thomas and from outside Belmont to Jaffa.
